Cook County Jail Conditions "Unconstitutional"

2008_7_17.jail.jpgThe U.S. Attorney's office filed a report on Cook County Jail today, and their findings are horrific. According to the report, living conditions in the jail violate inmates' human rights.

The 17-month investigation revealed that prison officials regularly failed to protect inmates from harm, both from other inmates and from jail staff; failed to provide adequate heathcare, including suicide prevention; and failed to provide sanitary conditions.

Health care also is a serious problem, the Justice Department found. The report cited an example of an inmate who contracted sepsis from an untreated gunshot wound and died. Another had to have a limb amputated.

"When you're talking about unnecessary amputations and death, you have a serious problem," [U.S. Attorney Patrick] Fitzgerald said.

A 98-page letter was delivered this morning to Todd Stroger and Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart outlining the problems, and the county now has 49 days to rectify the situation, after which the Justice Department could file a lawsuit.

Cook County Jail is the largest "single-site county pre-trial facility in the United States." The average daily population is 9,800, and includes men and women. [Fox, Trib, S-T]

Christopher Devine: Of No Fixed Address: Class Warfare

They won't even let us use the bathrooms, half these places. If we don't buy nothin'--even thought I'm a Vietnam vet--they tell me I can't use the bathroom. I fought the war for them, got shot four times, and I can't use a bathroom?

Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.: Attacks on ACORN Based Not on Facts, But on Fear of 1.3 Million Poor People Registering

The Republicans tried to make fun of Barack Obama as a community organizer at their national convention in Minnesota, which I guess just goes to show how little Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert have to fear from right-wing "humor."

Now they've gone further: Now they're attacking ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now), one of the strongest, hardest-working, most dedicated community organizations in both Chicago and in 40 states across the U.S.

Sheriff Dart Sued To Enforce Evictions

2008_10_09_rdart.jpgCook County Sheriff Tom Dart, who made waves by announcing Wednesday he wouldn't enforce evictions of rent-paying tenants when the evictions were aimed at indebted landlords, was sued yesterday by Accredited Home Lenders so as to enforce Dart to move forward with such eviction

Cook County Sheriff Suspending Mortgage Foreclosure Evictions

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart will suspend all mortgage foreclosure evictions beginning Thursday, he announced today.

"These mortgage companies only see pieces of paper, not people, and don't care who's in the building," Dart said in a statement. "They simply want their money and don't care who gets hurt along the way. On top of it all, they want taxpayers to fund their investigative work for them. We're not going to do their jobs for them anymore. We're just not going to evict innocent tenants."

A Look at Local Prisons

Wednesday night's shanking at Cook County jail got us wondering: what's like to be in the pokey at 26th and California?

Palestine: “In Gaza our future is almost destroyed”

In this roundup of blogposts from Gaza we hear from a teenager who just lost her friend and is scared for her own life, about a medical worker who was killed as he went to save someone, and from a man who asserts his lack of political affiliation: “I’m not Fatah, not Hamas. I like vodka.”

Two days ago, Australian activist Sharyn Lock mentioned the death of a particular teenager:

Palestine: Israeli ground forces enter Gaza

On the evening of January 3, Israel sent ground troops and armoured vehicles into the Gaza Strip.

Prof. Said Abdelwahed, who teaches English at Al-Azhar University, posted earlier in the day at Moments in Gaza:

Australia: Following Gaza from Afar

Though Gaza is a long way from Australia, there have been many reactions to the catastrophe unfolding there. Many Australians have been using their blogs to post links that help to provide both information and analysis of what’s happening that is not always covered in the mainstream media.
